Travel & Tourism industry, the trends and the new normal in Western Europe countries

Updated: Apr 14, 2021

The Travel & Tourism Industry had great years, namely in Western Europe, the last 10 years, the low-cost travel airlines brought passengers for the weekend, holidaymakers, families, digital nomads and the tourism from around the world flourished beside the usual incoming destinations...

Before the Pandemic outbreak that made the Travel & Tourism Industry enter in standby mode, there were already signs of crisis in certain Touristic destinations due to Brexit and the recession in the UK.

Last year, Thomas Cook bankruptcy left many Touristic operators with huge debts, and Ryanair closed some operational subsidiaries leaving a lot of unemployed staff...

The British middle-class travellers that used to be headed to the South of Portugal, Spain, or Greece for the weekend, and on summer holidays have no money to travel because last year or the year before they have lost their jobs, and the pound in comparison with the Euro worths only more 10 cents today.... that doesn't allow these travellers to make holidays in the EU countries ...now with the Pandemic outbreak, the UK, one of the biggest incoming markets for these countries is battling with the one of the worst recession ever and a possible full lockdown emerged yesterday as infected cases doubled ...

Touristic Operators, Hotels, Airlines focused in the British Market are now struggling with the Pandemic, the Brexit, and much more...moreover, there are many trends that have become the new normal and that affect the Tourism & Travel Industry, starting with virtual meetings that will reduce business travel.

Most of the travellers flying during this crisis and after the pandemic outbreak ends will be probably digital nomads and families in a small percentage...

The most well-travelled generation ever are Millennials and Gen Z;

The above is highly concerned with the environment;

Flight shame is a trend;

High digital connectivity and digital detox are paradoxes;

Individual mobility & two heel mobility are here to stay;

Coliving is the new normal for Millennials & Gen Z;

During the Pandemic the holiday bookings swift from the usually crowded vacation areas to the countryside, and from hotels to villas & resorts;

The rising of the train travel glamour;

Fewer purchases and more rental items from clothes to suitcases;

Travelling light is another trend to consider...

At the light of these facts and trends, the Travel & Tourism Industry needs to troubleshoot their problems, strategize, pivot and come up with new business models, new corporate growth strategies, namely, the European Western Countries.

Airlines need to come up with new business models, grow by partnering with other travel operators and mobility services...

Hotels have been using creativity to pivot to coworking, coliving, work offices, and other services during the Pandemic, but those in vacation destinations need to go further and pivot their promotion efforts to capture other markets such as Northern Europe Countries less affected with the pandemic, and other countries outside the EU.

The Travel & Tourism Industry is very traditional, but now, needs to move fast, and incorporate innovation in their culture and apply lean startup methodologies to be more agile in pivoting...airports and airlines need to learn from the Hotel groups that pivoted successfully, because travel will not be the same anymore...
